This design is a crucial piece of Yukon History. It is the very first Yukon Sign. Posted at the border of British Columbia and the Yukon Territory along the Chilkoot Trail, this sign is now part of the permanent collection at the White Pass and Yukon Route Museum and Train Station at Bennett Lake, which is open to the public only one day of the year on Canada Day. 

You can imagine for a man like me, that getting to see this sign in person was a peak moment.  Nearly every human who climbed either the White Pass from Skagway, Alaska, or the Chilkoot Trail from Dyea, Alaska, passed by THIS SIGN!  This sign is the grandfather and grandmother of all Alaska and Yukon Signs!

During a 2024 meeting with John Streiker, the Yukon's minister, I began my quiet, private mission to document the Yukon's most significant signs.  Minister Streiker had challenged me to do just this, and not one to back down from a challenge. This sign was the most remote, rare, and coveted item on my list.  So you can imagine what it means to me.

The Chilkoot Trail, or Grease Trail, was the primary trading route for Euchalon oil among the First Nations Tlingit people before the 1898 Gold Rush. During the Gold Rush, the Chilkoot Trail was used by greedy white men who thirsted for Klondike gold more than they thirsted for their wives back home.  

The Chilkoot Trail led to Bennett Lake, which provided direct access to the famed Yukon River. The Yukon River delivered the greedy to their goal: Dawson and the Klondike Gold Fields.  The Chilkoot Trail is the beginning, middle, and end of Alaska, of the Yukon, of the Inside Passage, of the Fjordlands of Alaska, and of countless Tlingit legends.  This trail is the Yukon and Alaska. This is it.  This is what you came for. Whether or not you ever get to stand next to this sign at Bennet Lake, this trail is the conduit that connects Skagway to the Yukon and Dawson Gold. It connects Western and Northern First Nations cultures.  Most importantly, the Chilkoot Trail connects us to the land. Don't sleep on this design.  You'll get 10 if you know what's up.
